Stain, film-forming glaze, or opaque paint: these are not the same film, nor do they require the same maintenance. The thinner the coat, the shorter the maintenance intervals. The product information sheet remains the reference.

Light colors on the facade

In sunlight, a dark stain can reach temperatures of up to 80°C. On resinous wood: resin seepage, tension, and sometimes cracking. For highly exposed outdoor areas, opt for light to medium-light stains—especially on larch, pine, and spruce.

When to renovate?

Apply a damp cotton cloth for 2–3 minutes. If the wood darkens, the film no longer provides sufficient protection. Timely refinishing prevents the need for stripping. Typical interval for an exterior glaze: 2 to 6 years depending on exposure, the product used, and roof overhangs.

Before repainting: test the stain on the existing wood. Wood that has already been stained absorbs stain differently than new wood; the renovation coat often adheres better than the first, if the surface is still sound.

How to choose

• Windows, doors (stable wood): film-forming system, primer + finish according to the datasheet (often HLS then Filter 7 at Cetol).
• Cladding, shelter, pergola : film-forming stain or impregnation depending on the maintenance you accept.
• A wood-like appearance is required : a wood stain, not a covering enamel.
• Solid color, maximum durability : exterior wood paint/enamel.
